This helmet probably developed in Italy and was popular among infantry soldiers due to the visibility as well as nearly full head protection. It could have developed from the small skull cap worn under great helms and became very popular in the late 13th century.
The development to full visor had not occurred yet and would see the addition of a nasal guard later before the visored bascinet came into popularity. The Original of this battle-ready replica of a bassinet helmet without visor dates in the middle of the 14th century. This type of helmet evolved from the skull cap or cervelliere.
